Some events in history have become lost in the mists of time. For example, we know very well the words of the first telephone connection. Alexander Graham Bell was working on transmitting his voice through his first phone, but was having difficulty contacting his assistant in an adjoining room.

The story is famous. Mr Bell describes it in his journal of  March 10, 1876:

Bell's journal, now at the Library of Congress, contains the following entry for March 10, 1876:
"I then shouted into M [the mouthpiece] the following sentence: "Mr. Watson, come here -- I want to see you."
What has become lost to history is what Bell then heard in the ear piece of the phone. Rather indistinct, but still understandable, he heard Watson's voice saying: "I sorry but Mr. Watson can't come the phone right now. If you will leave your name and a message, he will get back to you at his earliest convenience."
